Do I need a licensed contractor to remove asbestos?

Most states require licensed or certified professionals for asbestos abatement, and the EPA recommends that removal and major repair be done by trained and qualified people. Rules differ for small residential jobs, so check with your state agency. See our hiring checklist.

Do I have to remove asbestos in my house?

Not necessarily. The EPA says material in good condition that will not be disturbed should be left alone. See when to test.

Can I test for asbestos myself?

The EPA does not recommend taking samples yourself, because improper sampling can release fibres. Hire a licensed inspector.
